Erl Passion Play

The origin of the Erl Passion Play can be traced back to a vow from the time of the plague and has demonstrably shaped the community of Erl and its people since 1613. This makes Erl the oldest passion play location in the German-speaking area. The Erl Passion Play has been an important feature of the extensive Tyrolean cultural landscape since the Middle Ages - in Erl for more than 400 years already. The next passion play in Erl will take place in 2019 in the famous passion play house in Erl. More than 600 residents of Erl community stage the suffering and death of Jesus Christ every six years. The individual performances are played in German language with English supertitles. The Erl play is characterised by a distinct reconstruction of the way of the cross and a contemporary and modern text, specially composed passion music, presented live by the choir and orchestra.
